Groundhog Landscaping designs and builds custom outdoor kitchens, built-in grill islands, outdoor fireplaces, and fire pits across Buffalo, Clarence, Amherst, Williamsville, East Amherst, Hamburg, Orchard Park, and the rest of Western New York. Built-in outdoor cooking and fire features extend your usable season — in WNY that can mean April through November on a covered patio with a fireplace nearby — and they substantially raise the resale appeal of a property.
Most outdoor kitchen failures we see in WNY come from over-spec’d builds that look amazing in renderings but never get used: a 12-foot island three steps from the back door is rarely as good as a 6-foot one closer to the patio dining table. We design around how you actually entertain — party sizes, who cooks, what direction smoke needs to blow, and which appliances you’ll actually use vs. add for the listing photos. Then we build the surround out of veneer-grade pavers or natural stone that matches the rest of your hardscape.
Common questions about outdoor kitchens, fireplaces, and fire pits in the Buffalo area.
A simple veneer-wrapped grill island with a quality built-in grill, side burner, and storage typically starts around $8,000–$15,000. A full outdoor kitchen with refrigerator, sink, pizza oven, and bar seating can run $25,000–$60,000+. Pricing depends heavily on appliance selection.
Most Buffalo-area homes that already have natural gas service can be extended to an outdoor grill or fireplace with a licensed plumber. We coordinate gas runs as part of the project. For homes without nat-gas, propane tanks (in-ground or surface) are a good alternative.
Wood-burning fireplaces deliver more heat and the smell/atmosphere most people picture, but they require splitting and storing wood and produce ash. Gas fireplaces light at the push of a button, are cleaner, and let you enjoy a fire for 30 minutes without commitment. We install both. For weekly use, most clients lean gas; for occasional “event” nights, wood-burning wins.
Simple grill-island builds run 1–2 weeks. Full outdoor kitchens with multiple appliances, gas runs, and integrated patios typically take 3–6 weeks. Pizza oven installations add another week or so for the dome build and curing.
Most towns in Erie County require a permit for gas-line work and for masonry fireplaces (chimney height, clearances to combustibles). Decorative fire pits and prefab gas inserts often do not. We handle permits and inspections as part of the project.
Yes — we’ll evaluate the patio base (built-in islands and masonry fireplaces add significant point load, so they sometimes need a deeper footing than the original patio has). Often we’ll extend the patio with a thickened-base section to receive the new feature.
